Cypress Mountain: New SkyQuad Chairlift

Winter 2022/23

Cypress Mountain's iconic Sky Chair has been the gateway to our unparalleled mountain top viewpoint since it was first installed thirty five years ago. The 1968 vintage Mueller chairlift, was removed from Apex Alpine Resort near Penticton in early September 1987, and transported to Cypress Mountain where it was completely rebuilt and re-designed for placement on the upper slopes of Mt. Strachan.
The Team at Cypress Mountain completed the entire project in just three months, and the chairlift opened December 10, 1987, powered by an old diesel engine attached to the drive station.   At that time, there was no road access to the Sky Chair location, so use of the old Sunrise double chair (now Lions Chair) and helicopter transport were the only ways to get materials and personnel to the site.  The workhorse Chairlift operated through many weather extremes and deep snow conditions but, with improvements over the years, Sky Chair continued to provide access to the best high alpine skiing and snowboarding on the North Shore.

This summer in the spirit of continuing to invest in upgrading the recreation facilities at Cypress Mountain, we are very excited to announce the installation of a brand new Doppelmayr Quad Chair, the "SkyQuad" to replace the old double chair. A prominent feature of the SkyQuad will be the loading carpet which will automatically guide skiers and riders at the bottom terminal to easily and seamlessly load the four person chairs.  The SkyQuad will have a design capacity of 1800 persons per hour and ride time will give passengers just over 4 minutes to enjoy the fantastic view.

Construction on the new SkyQuad will commence this April after Cypress Mountain closes for the winter season and is expected to be completed by October - ready for opening day 2022/23!

Russell Chamberlain, the President of Cypress Mountain Resort, confirmed the upgrade stating "With the huge new Heated Outdoor Dining Plaza beside the Cypress Creek Lodge, more upgrades to the Snowmaking System including the purchase of 15 new SMI Super Polecat Tower Guns, and now the new Loading Conveyor equipped SkyQuad Chairlift, Cypress Mountain is making great strides in transforming the Resort facilities to better accommodate our valued Season Passholders and Four Season Guests.
